Boat trip to Skedans. old poles

SKEDANS

Headed out to the old village site of Skedans on Louise Island - on the west side facing Hecate Straight. After a lovely dawn 90minute drive down from Masset to Charlotte, 30 min ferry ride to the south island, 40 minutes jolting drive on a rough logging road, in a packed van with 10 others, and then a covered boat trip of another 45 minutes over some heavy swells. You have to be committed (and I don't mean crazy) to travel out to these remote locations. But that is what makes the visitors to Haida Gwaii a bit special. Unless you've got money. then you hop in a float plane or helicoptor for a $2000 day. We had a great day with Queen Charlotte Adventures - Glen & Lexie were our guides.

Arrived in Moresby Camp with clouds hanging up on the peaks, and a glimpse of blue sky. At the head of Cumshewa inlet (about 25 km inland - cutting almost half was across the island) this is the grand central station of wilderness tours, paddlers, sail, boat and fishing charters, and travellers. The sun broke through and yes - again there were rainbows ! in the bow spray from our sturdy aluminum hull. As you can see from the pics, we ended up with a fabulous sunny, sea sparkling day. It is so great to see things from the water.

Heading out to the east side of Louise Island Lexie pointed out several old logging and cannery sites. Cumshewa and Slewyn inlets had been a major industrial zone for the area, large camp "town" sites complete with a school and pub. Unfortunately it shows in the scarred and scattered regrowth after heavy logging on every island and hillside. Today all the machinery from such practice is removed throughout Gwaii Haanas, and the encroaching forest moves in to take back with seedlings, moss and decay.

We passed through/over many kelp beds, and the small bay at Skedans was full of waving ribbons of underwater fronds. We trundled into the small boat to go ashore, and the Watchmen were waiting for us on the beach. There was the largest burl log ashore that I have ever seen, the bark, splits and swirls of grain quite unique. The coastal views and headlands would have been spectacular - even without a pole. Backed by tall basalt bluffs and deep forest, with a small stream at hand, this would have been an ideal village site. Our young Watchmen interpreters provided information books and a "comfort" break, and a couple of deer browsed around the cabin.

Wind and welfare

Folks here take the weather pretty seriously. They talk about it all the time, everywhere you go. In a place where every other person has or is out on a boat, with some of the most unpredictable waters in the west...it is serious. Fishers, tour operators, charters seem to be the mainstay of the local economy. And it changes every hour. Sitting at the waters edge the clouds were racing by in two distinct layers overhead. Isolated low fluffy and high, thin long stripes of white.

I enjoyed a warm and sunny morning out hiking and sketching, but by 2 pm it was gusting and howling through the open windows in the house. Stole my hat when I got out at the hardware store in Masset, and brought the chill marine cloud down on upon us before you even noticed. Never did get to see Alaska.

Coming to Haida Gwaii I had 3 weeks to do an outdoor art project - and expected there would be isolated days of lighter weather to get the painting and the varnish done. I didn't schedule anything, so that I could work around the daily elements. I never anticipated it would be done in a 10 days. There was an article in the Observer this week about the driest June and July for a long time. Not only did I get the work done without a hitch - every time I have had the opportunity to go exploring somewhere special, the sun has appeared. I lucked out big time.

thanks again to the Village of Queen Charlotte staffers, for the admin support and the site preparation. Couldn't have done it without you. And to Bill and Heather Beamish for their generous, relaxed and flexible hospitality. And especially for my roadside studio and wheels. In a place with no buses - there would have been no exploring for me.

Working at home today on the paintings that I have started on location. so far so good.

Two Hill - most fabulous steps in the world

The stairs on Tow Hill

I have seen a lot of trails, paths and walkways all over the world. But never anything like this. You must excuse the mulitple photos of the boardwalk here, but I was seriously blown away with deep appreciation and respect for the trail builders of Tow Hill. Not only the obvious commitment of expense for materials and labour...but the effort and sweat to get so much stuff up such a hill. And to do an exceptional job of it. In this place of mud, moss, roots and rocks to trip you up, you have to watch EVERY step. But I was able to wander up the slope at leisure, gazing above at the trees and birds, each wooden step marked and placed just so. It is amazing. And makes this unique and lovely place in the world safely accessible to many more visitors. Thank you BC Provincial Parks and happy birthday (100 years)

East facing lookout over North Beach stretches away to Rose Point. Many vehicles and folks clamming and crabbing along the hard packed tidal sands. Lots of 4 wheel drive vehicles heading off to explore the streches of beach out and around the point. Nothing but driftwood and beach shrubs facing the sea in front of the forest - for as far as you can see. The Hiellen River mouth and black basalt rock bluffs of Tow Hill break the sweeping stretch of sand.

Lots of the trees are affected with large burls, a mutated growth out the side of the trunk. This happens in isolated areas where many nearby trees will also have burls. (they are beautiful swirls of shimmery wood grain when cut and polished) but I have noticed that in the burl affected areas some trees also have fantastic branch and multiple trunk formations. Kind of a spooky magical forest feeling. Add the moss, old mans beard, mist and shafts of sunlight...and there you have it. Haida Gwaii magic. really somthing hard to photograph. You just had to be there. but there was no one but me - had the place all the myself...didn't see another person all morning. Was wonderful.

West facing lookout over South Beach - From this platform perched atop the steep cliff you cannot see the rock below you. The flat bogs and forest of the north end of Graham Island stretch away. Salal and roots of windblown spruce cling to and overhang the face of the basalt escarpment. and the round sweep of the beach and bays are outstanding. Nearest Yakan point is the site of one of the oldest and largest middens ( archeological sites of clam shell and village site) on the Queen Charlottes. It is a private area of band land marked from the roadway. also looks like a favorite spot for surfers.

A great place to spend a sunny morning - views in all directions. and without even checking the tide tables I managed to hit the blowhole at it huffing and spashing best. Complete with rainbows in every spray.

thursday - start the day with Cinnamon buns.

I decided to explore only as far as Agate beach. Then come back out to do Tow Hill and area another time - and just drive through what I had already seen. Yeah - good luck with that.

It seems to take me a very long time to get anywhere here in Haida Gwaii. Nothing wrong with the roads or my maps...I just keep stopping to take photos. and looking for likely places to paint.
So don't ask me if it was 10 minutes drive or 40. I couldn't tell ya.

this time I made it out past the foot of Tow Hill, to the campground and river mouth of the Hiellen River. Started being low tide - but after an hour painting, I was chased up the bankside by the rising waters edge.

The road to Tow Hill is an adventure unto itself. Like a tall avenue the spruce - large and small - are spiky and menacing, but all the while dripping with fat pelts of moss. the forest floor a green carpet, rolling over fallen logs and stumps. The road widens and narrows between the feet of huge trees, oncoming cars having to wait to pass. Glimpses of the crashing surf and the sound of constant songbirds coming through the window.

Painting days

Well the weather is telling me to stay in today and get some work done. thankfully I have had several really great sunny and misty days to take lots ( that would be hundreds) of photos. So plenty of inspiration and references to start some new work. These are a few of the sketches and thumbnail layouts that I am working on. And the internet connection is down - so even more reason to get the paints out. I will have to post this later.

yes this is a dugout canoe - and that is Tow hill in the background. more about that later.
Composition sketch for the St Mary's Spring view. Along the highway from Skidegate to Tlell there is a little pull-out and a chainsaw sculpture of a lady. Beside her is a lovely little fresh water spring - and as the story goes "whoever drinks from this spring will return to the islands".

Toes in the sand

Well OK...boots in the sand. It doesn't feel much like summer yet on the coast. About 10-15 degrees, and in keeping with the tradition of weather here on Haida Gwaii - wait half an hour and it will change. no wonder it reminds me of Ireland. The same situation of an isolated island at the edge of the sea. The light always changing and the rain not far off.

North Beach _

Did I happen to mention I am very fond of seaweed?... You can keep the shells - I'm the one happily walking along stooped over looking at the piles of shiny, wrinkled, smooth, bumpy and otherwise stuff that has been torn from its sea bed to land here on this windswept sand. you can look back and follow my footsteps from clump to clump. Kelp, eelgrass and all those other ones.(need to do some ID for the others...) they go from dripping and juicy at the edge of the sea through all stages... to dry and sand encrusted things that look like something from Tut's tomb.

My first introduction to North Beach was at Sangan river. A small road with undeveloped building lots, reached almost to the dunes.Lovely winding reaches of sandy banks wraps back and forth until it flattens out into the sea. a brief stretch of grasses and soft sandy dunes rises up from the tide line. the darkness of mossy forest behind.
Miles of sand in either direction - Not a bird or a person in sight. Rain spitting and wind rolling in from the Northwest. they say you can see all the way to Alaska from here...but not today.

and then I look down at my feet at the wildflowers on the dunes.

Crossing the flats

From Tlell the highway cuts a straight slash across the island to port Clement. The interior landscape here quite a different forest and boggy low lands. It is SO green. the photos just don't do it justice. Beautiful grassy ponds, streams and bog edges in contrast to craggy & stunted pine tree forms in the landscape. Stopped at Mayer lake and again suprized by a jewel of color hidden in the forest.

While I was stooping at the edge with my toes in the mud (I have my serious gumboots for exploring) to take a long shot of the waterlilies, I noticed movement in the water at my feet and looked down to find a squirming mass of tadpoles at the lakes edge. No legs yet for these newbies.

The water in the streams and lakes here is stained like dark red-brown tea ( from the natural tannin in the water) and makes an amazing blend of color with the sun and blue sky reflecting.

From Queen Charlotte and Skidegate up the eastern coast to Tlell the road winds along the shoreline. This is the eastern side of Graham Island and faces the shallow and somewhat unpredictable Hecate Straight. Leaving the heavily forested islands and mountains behind - long stretches of rocky tidal shoreline interrupted by outcroppings of ragged black volcanic rock, and stands of windblown conifers.The landscape flattens out and there are small deer everywhere...a doe with 2 really small fawns was making her way across the road, but otherwise they are calmly browsing at the grassy roadsides.

thanks to Penny Richardson for the use of her little "stackwood" cabin for the central hub of the days painting. what a great little place. We walked through the thin mossy trees to the open beach and dunes beyond...everyone spreading out in different directions to photograph, paint and sketch. the sun came blasting through after an hour or so. and another fantastic day in haida Gwaii.

the tidal foreshore just off Queen Charlotte village. Morning fog wrapped around all the islands and moved through till it burned off to a sunny morning. I was driving up to Tlell about 6:30 and had some great views near the kaay center and the carving sheds on the shore in Skidegate.driftwood on the east side near Tlell.

Studio time - workshops

a busy day Saturday - finishing details on the box - got rained out about 9 am. then painting in the classroom studio before the workshop in the afternoon. I was finishing a small panel from Bonanza Beach and it is heading down to Arizona with the folks that were there with me on the tour . Dinner out at Howlers ( sounds awful but it was actually quite tasteful and an awesome view) and a walk around the village wharf afterwards. Shall try to get down to paint the colorful boat up in the Ways being painted.

It turned out to be a lovely evening after an unsettled day. this is the view from the wharf back over the float plane dock and west. about 1/2 tide...it changes dramatically all day long.

Usually that means that it is finished...but I will have to do some finishing cloud-sky color on the top after we remove the tarp cover. Weather forcast good for Wednesday - so that may be the big day for final paint and clear coat also.

This is Donald, my studio assistant - he helps out while I am busy painting, showing the sketches to the visitors and tourists, and pointing out all the details around the box. This only happens between kite flying and bike riding - he is a very busy fellow. His parents have Lam's restaurant across the street - nice hot welcome wonton after a damp, chilling morning on the roadside.

this is another one of my regular visitors...she/he wanders around checking out the latest creative additions. Flys away if she is not impressed. everyone's a critic. it was funny when I found her it reminded me of the job I used to do for giftware design. The owner insisted in putting a ladybug on just about everything (sculpted and painted in resin) and here she was on my big box - modeling perhaps looking for her big break.
I have set up to paint and teach in the Community Club building here in the Village of Queen Charlotte. you can see the water right beyond the park/playground outside the window and today the Farmer's Market if on - so fresh cheese and tomatoes from Tomato Island Joe. He comes in on his boat from one of the small offshore islands - has a greenhouse to grow them this far north.

and one of my frequent visitors - the raven has now made its way onto the other end of the box from the eagle. More photos tommorrow of the finished work...too much rain this morning to stay on site.

Roadtrip - west coast Haida Gwaii

well everyone was telling me I had to see Bonanza beach - and even our guide was stunned by the sunny clear conditions. It was spectacular. I managed a start to a small panel and take some great shots. this will be a day to remember for a long time and for a larger painting. Thank you Haida Gwaii for the best day off.

Roadtrip - west coast Haida Gwaii

GREGORY BEACH
You could hear the surf from the edge of the forest, shoulder high with lush salal bushes, and the trees change character as you near the windswept outer coast.

Gregory beach is a long curve between two wooded headlands. not heavy surf crashing, but a steady swell that lifted way up the sloping, stony beach to leave a bright rim of white that stretched across the bay.

the moss and undergrowth comes right onto the open beach. lovely blue green beach grasses with tall straight seed heads, and the bleached litter of driftwood tossed up the length of the cove.

Roadtrip - Yakoun Lake

Did a tour into Yakoun Lake and Rennel Sound on Tuesday with Christie from Beyond the Beaten Path tours. The main road a bit rough with potholes but otherwise fine - some logging truck activity to watch out for. Side road into Yakoun Lake was overgrown with alders and side growth, but it looks like the forestry/park folks were there to do some clearing.
after a fabulous easy walk through deep forest with some really large spruce trees, many small flowers and a carpet of tiny ferns, we came through the last trees to the beautiful beach.

strange to walk out of the dark heavy undergrowth and suddenly be on a lovely sandy beach in the blazing sun. It really could not have been a more lovely day of sunshine and still water. With the late spring and summer we were fortunate to still have snow on the distant peaks.
I am familiar with large trees - coming from a rainforest area myself. But these spruce are SO straight right out of the ground, and clear of branches for up to about 50 feet. I am so used to the flaring trunks and sweeping lower branches of the cedars in our southern forest.

This newborn was only about 18 in tall and headed off the road when he froze and pretended to be invisible. His mum was not far away. amazing they can get up and run so soon after birth. He was quite beautiful - we were only sad that we frightened him

Garden Envy or Veggies with a view

I can't possibly justify coming all the way to Haida Gwaii and painting flowers. I just can't.
But in honor of the dedicated gardeners up here in Queen Charlotte - I will share a few pics.

Working my way down from standing to sitting on my little stool as the details come to the broad areas of color and the elements start to become more defined. the biggest comment so far is "what is the red for?..."
I use the cool and warm underpainting as part of the fill color (especially in the case of the water) some of it shows, some gets covered up. It helps define the spacial depth between the forground "land" and objects and the distance.

My challenge is trying to keep the detail to a minimum, and just to suggest the forms and light....and getting that eyeball just right on this fellow.

Painting time - Queen Charlotte

not much exploring time with a 12 hour day on the brushes yesterday...
but thought I would share a few pics from about town. The Village of Queen Charlotte is scattered along a narrow hillside strip of shoreline with spits and points protruding out into a shallow tidal inlet. At low tide the offshore islands are accessible on foot. The "beach" is a mass of crumbled blackish colored slate like stone, and wraps around the remaining solid ledges and shelves along the tide line.
At low tide patches of long grasses are exposed, some spots muddy some solid. The colors of the seaweed and bright grasses stand out bright against the dark stone. And long undulating rolls of "wrack" seaweed and sea going bits are rolled up to the high tide line.

Throughout town several homes, parks and buildings have these unique cedar/concrete decorative walls.

Day 4 - Queen Charlotte

DAILY ACTIVITIES - Thursday July 7

Well - so much for the dailly blog.

I apoligize -but the hands on demands of the project take precedence over my efforts at social media.

After weeks of preparing and developing the new website - it is not functioning for me (could just be my computer but I don't have the time or patience to investigate the problem at present)

so my journal may not be as "daily" as I had hoped.

the good news is the weather is cooperating and we are almost half way to completion. 6 hours to put in this morning and then off to the Skidegate museum and center to explore. Lots of positive feedback on the street :-) well its actually more off on the shoulder...than on the street. Visitors, families and local characters all stopping by to check things out.

Arrival - Haida Gwaii

Clear skies for my departure flight out of Vancouver, gave me a great view of my own hometown of Gibsons Landing. These are the islands of Howe Sound (originally charted and named by Capt Vancouver) The islands include: Bowen, Gambier and Keats, and beyond the long fiord that extends up to Squamish - the route to Whistler. I was amazed to see the new clearing above my own home, for a new development. You don't consider how large a space when you see the earth movers on the ground day after day. My arrival into Sandspit was a bumpy one with 80km tailwind - but that explains the fabulous rugged trees that surround the airport. No longer in the sheltered coast of the south, the character of the trees give a totally new perpective to this coastal landscape and I look forward to sketching and painting them. And look at all that low tide to explore...not exactly beach, but tiny chunks of the local stone. Much of the inside of Hecate Straight is a shallow, tidal passage. I could see from plane what looked just like tropical atolls and spits way out in the middle of the open water. The remains of an earlier glacial passage.

enjoyed the late light (more north than home) and a walk back along the low tide. Eagles, old wrecks, small walls of seaweed, and moon shells.

When you see the canopy go up this morning we will be starting to clean and prep the 1st box.

More hands are welcome!

Wed am we will be meeting for an info session. Anyone interested in painting future public art projects: planning, designing and using lasting materials and finishes for exterior artworks might find it of interest.

LOCATION: We are hoping to use one of the smaller rooms at the Community Center for the Wed meeting and the upcoming FREE painting workshops next week. Time: 10:00 am

MEXICO Art Adventure Spring 2013

Join me in Mexico for a sketching and Watercolor painting workshop & tour .

Puerto Vallarta, Bucerius and San Sebastion - for 10 days / March 2013 final cost and dates TBA

I will be working with
Tours of Exploration for this excursion. A bit of the beach, the mountains, colonial history and colorful Puerto Vallarta.

There will be lots of painting demonstrations, structured lessons for Watercolor, as well as sketching with the group on location. Moderate accomodation (to keep the costs down) Lots of relaxing or shopping time, optional excursions, great food and locations to visit.

Paint a little - or paint a lot! Beginners are welcome - and I will have other challenges for you Intermediate to Advanced painters.

When I get the opportunity - this is my favorite pastime. To sit for an hour or two in one spot and watch the day unfold. This sketch is called "Independance Day" as it was the preparation for the festivities on the holiday weekend. Where I sat on the shady boulevard the elementary school drum band (and strange horns) was practicing behind the wall of the school yard. They made up for the bad timing with mucho enthusiasm. The smells of the local taco stand and the man that cooks the Churros (long sugared donut) waft across the plaza. Church bells give a different ring for the 1/4 and 1/2 hour. The birds are screeching in the group of trees behind me. and the old men on the bench next to me speak quietly in spanish. Lots of busy car traffic, parents dropping off the kids to school...their colorful costumes and uniforms adding to the scene and happy laughter as they greet their friends. Kids really are the same everywhere.
When I work on location - it is more than just viewing and documenting information. I soak in all the surroundings and think of it each time I see that drawing. My small sketchbooks are not for sale or publication. They are like a friend that speaks back to me the story of that place. I hope by writing some of my experience, and posting my paintings, I can share some of that story with you.

PALM STUDY - Casita Rosita
Bucerius
My pal Rosemary has an amazing tropical getaway hidden in the dusty streets of Bucerius - Casa Rosita near Puerto Vallarta.
This was what greeted me in the humid sunshine of the first morning on the balcony. The casita is like living in the canopy of many varieties of palm trees in the garden. Complete with bright Oriels, hummingbirds, iguanas, possums and the biggest black bumblebee I have EVER seen. He was like a slow helicopter buzzing the vines and flowers. I am always facinated by the patterns and layers of the palm leaves - but I had never seen the seeds and fruit so close before.

Further down along the pebble paved pathway through the garden the sounds of a splashing fountain defy the blistering heat of the sun overhead. The Ginger flowers stand up from 3 to 8 feet high. and of course against the background of the blue patterned tile...it is a visual delight.

and what mexican Jardin is complete without a blast of bouganvilla. this last painting is also of the tile surround under the brick edge of the stucco walls. shadows and all . one of my favorite plants wherever I find them...they remind me of little snips of bright tissue paper...overlapping with shadows and shapes, spilling over the roughest of walls and climbing the tallest trees.

I will be finishing a couple of plein air watercolors from the mountain village of San Sebastion and load them tomorrow. So check back for more mexican art adventures.

We've decided to go Greek.
Friends for a long time, we kept meeting up and talking about our shared interest in the Greek myths, goddesses and arts. SO...then we discussed doing some kind of project together...That was last Christmas.
I worked on some sketches, searching reference material and finally got the chance to work with Suzan in her wonderful new studio in Roberts Creek the second week in March.
These small "shards" are the very beginning. These ones are magnets - approx 2-3 inches.
A chance for me to try my hand at the materials (Glass paints - made with finely ground glass color) practice and plan for the larger pieces. We will be working with iconic vase shapes and doing 6" to 22" fused, leaded and painted wall plaques and window hangings.

We'll do a full exhibition with an opening at Susan's studio May 30 - June 17.

La Conner - March plein air painting

This is the view of the old Victorian house next to our B & B Katy's Inn (which I would highly recommend) close to the town center and the old neighborhood homes in such a beautiful spot.
Amarch is usually a bit early for the tulips ( plantations of bulb farms in the Skagit Valley) but the dafodills were amazing. Shocking neon yellow fields against the dark soil and farm fields. This little 8x10 panel was the first attemp at some plein air on the trip. Finally found an early blooming tulip field and a place to stop near the roadside. I got this much done on site, and had to head back for breakfast at Katy's Inn (not to be missed) at 9:00. The deep perspective of the completely flat fields creates such great space and distance. Quite different from my usual forest, mountains, ocean views near home. I kept shooting photos of the huge sky and the horison kept getting lower & lower.
We spent a day touring and walking in Anacortes, about 30 minutes from La Conner. After a GREAT lunch at Adrift restaurant, lots of galleries and a fabulous wool/fabric shop...(Brian is so patient...) we headed for Washington Park. Beautiful quiet wooded roadway (one way loop) and great views over the San Juan islands and Fidalgo bay. The sun was out and away from the wind it was quite warm. I set up to work on the high outlook. great rugged pines and many arbutus below me on the hill. Got most of this done on site - added a bit of highlight to the fence and tree later.

Below is pictured "Cherry Lane" and it was the highlight of my Plein Air adventure. a 16 x 20 acrylic on Canvas. Along 3rd street from our B &B there are many lovely restored old heritage homes. (Katy's Inn is 125 years old.) When the local garden maintenance guys finally stopped mowing, I chose a spot looking at the back of one property. A funny barn/chapel little building was peeking out from an explosion of blossom against the dark fir trees and a lovely little garden in front.
So I am painting away, quite happily in the warm sunshine...and a fellow drives up in his car.
Now I usually get a few onlookers and folks who like to chat but this wasn't quite what I expected.

He stops and rolls down the window, and says " well you are VERY brave to be out here working in this neighborhood - keep an eye out for the turkeys "
Now we had heard from several sources about the infamous gang of wild, LARGE turkeys that supposedly roam around La Conner. Brian & I thought is might just be a rural myth for the tourists. So... I said with a chuckle "you're kidding right????"
" Oh No !...they can be nasty " he replies
"if they come after you...just jump that fence right there and you should be fine"

Well now... I have been chased by dogs, nuzzled by cats, splashed by cars and poked by children while working on location. These are risks we adventurous artists take. But to be chased by Turkeys !
I managed to finish my work before a rain shower threatened and thanks to a local cat Max, who kept me company at the roadside...I avoided the dreaded Turkey gang.

But I do have documentation from our encounter the following morning.
They came gobbling down our street, blocking traffic, puffing up and showing no fear. 7 fat turkeys, 3 males and 4 females. At the sound of honking horns and gobbling...We leapt up from our breakfast to run out and take photos.

Of course for us this is a great novelty...but I think for the patient residents of La Conner ( where they roost on roofs, block traffic and dig up gardens) the novelty had worn pretty thin.

Now you too can say you have seen the illusive La Conner Turkeys.
A great place to visit and explore. and the flowers are beyond belief.

This is the first stage of Estuary #5. I am stuggling to keep the bold brushwork and looseness of the initial paint without getting more detailed.
Obviously a new lower horizon and the dramatic clouds changes the composition.
I am considering blogging a monthly "lesson" to show stages of work in progress. anyone interested?

I have finished my teaching for the next month - and head for Saltspring and Vancouver Island next week for a painting/visiting roadtrip.

Local scenes from Gibsons and the Sunshine Coast...most that I have painted before so that I could work quickly. 12" x 18" happened to fit perfectly into my carry bag so they were light and easy to pack. Glad that I had brought my drier as the dampness was slowing down the drying considerably, and they got home safely.
They are now down at our local gallery Gift of the Eagle and sell for $420 each.

O Zone - Day Two artist on location

The crowd on Sunday Feb 14 transformed from a mixed crowd to later in the afternoon families celebrating the Chinese News Year...beautiful traditional costumes on the children and drums and festivities.
The sun was out and lots more visitors to the Tourism BC "street" tent.
I gave out packages of art cards to visitors who voiced an interest in the Sunshine Coast and my paintings, many brochures for the Purple Banner studio tours, and over 400 sheets of B & W illustrations for the children to color.
The crayons were the high point of the day. Lots of fun for young & old.

My table consisted on a "colouring Zone" for the kids to use crayons and pick up rolled up pages to take home and colour. I have a binder with photos of several public art projects, painting plein air on location and illustration samples. I reserved a space at the end for my palette, water and brushes - and managed to keep it out reach of little hands. The posters mounted on the wall behind my table are my own photos that correspond with the 4 canvasses that I painted on site.

The Tourism BC volunteers were very energetic and helpful for me throughout the day, and we were visited by several local Richmond polititians, thanking us profusely for our efforts and activities. Not as many international visitors as I had anticipated but lots of folks who recognized Molly's Reach from the long running CBC television series the "Beachcombers". Lots of laughter and discussion of how old we were to have seen the original production or later re-runs.

My good friend Linda Williams represents the Sunshine Coast Tourism Association and is a tireless volunteer for the arts and music on the coast. She had her hands full of flags, and fun posting pins on the global map of visitors located in the BC Street tent at the O Zone.

O Zone event - Day 1 Feb 13

Well - that was a really busy couple of days. Brian (the husband) gave me a hand to get all the stuff out to the OZone site on the bus and Canada Line train. And before wandering off to check out the sights and activities he helped set up my display and table. Weather was awful which actually helped the crowd numbers "in" the BC Street tent. There was photo Ops set up from different areas and activities throughout BC...scuba diver, fisherman, mountain biker...wine drinkers... so that folks could take some fun shots.
The tourism BC folks and volunteers on hand to hand out flags, badges and chat with visitors. Mostly local folks taking avantage of the free activities, and lots of families - so I was really glad to have the coloring corner...it was a big hit.

The crayons were like magnets for the kids and a nice break for the parents. I had coloring sheets with
B & W illustrations from the Museum Mural, and all the west coast critters with information and a little riddle picture on each. I had also rolled up some sheets for them to take home and work on, and the board that I laid out on the table was almost as popular as the sheets...lots of doodling and scribbling.

It was great to see the patriotic enthusiasm in ALL languages...ages...shapes...colors and sizes! SO many folks in red and white shirts, Canada colors, touques, scarves and jackets - cowbells and bear bells ringing.
Pretty chilly and damp - but I was working away and handing out Purple Banner studio tour brochures, and cards to those who had an interest in the Sunshine Coast or the paintings.

People are usually a little shy of asking questions and getting a good close look at the painting while I am working. It seems to be a cultural thing though. Canadians I find, are VERY polite and stand-offish.
The asian visitors however are very curious and vocal. This lady decided it should be a "communal" painting with everyone getting to do a bit...

If I am looking a bit dubious you would be right. She grabbed the brush loaded it up with paint and was blobbling fence blue right over top of a bicycle and the windows of the building.

But lots of fun and no harm done.

Most people ask "how long did that take you ?" so I tell them about 2 hours and 50 years.

That makes them stop and think ...and changes their sense of "value" on the hours as opposed to the skill and experience invested.

I see great educational and experiential value in having folks see the painting happening on site...and lots of young folks, kids and students asking questions and getting good experience.

Most folks are simply amazed and say things like " look she is actually painting that picture !" or " did you just draw that ?"
It always reaffirms how fortunate I am to have a skill that most others would never experience and have little familiarity with. I will put the images in of the paintings that were completed on site.

I will be doing original “plein air” paintings of coastal scenes, chatting with visitors and promoting arts and events on the Sunshine Coast.

well not much sketching going on the last couple of weeks ...
but a lot of painting in the studio. I posted some sketches back in August of the concept for these new paintings.

I was bit scattered about what to concentrate on for the new work with a November deadline looming for the show at Gift of the Eagle - local gallery here in Gibsons BC. I guess my passion for the garden wins out every time.

There will be a series of large canvas , close-up (but not Georgia Okeefe closeup...) dynamic compositions of blooms, and a few still life of florals, baskets & china. I am going to include the watercolor studies as part of the show (matted only) and hope to have a series of small 12x12 canvasses available as well. I will see how I am doing with the large work.

On sunday morning after the sketchcrawl saturday

I stayed the night in Strathcona at my daughter's place, made my way slowly in the early morning through Chinatown. All the vendors putting out their streefront displays of colorful fruit and veg, early shoppers and primly dressed ladies on their way to worship.

Sun Yat Sen gardens are like a little sublime retreat in the middle of the city. The only noise was from the soccer pitch across the street - and all that yelling in Italian just added to the removal from the everyday.

I will be posting a few sketches made (the rest from photos) to plan for a painting for submission to their winter exhibition in the main hall of the gardens.

The Urban Sketchcrawl was the brainchild of Enrico Casarosa, in San Fransisco, 2006. He chooses a date every 3-4 months and posts it on their website.

The corner of Gore & Keefer is a buzz of activity any time after 8 am. The vendors working to clean and prepare the displays of veggies and fruit on the sidewalk stands.

The awnings and colorful dragon lamp posts make the whole scene quite unique.

finished 3 paintings in the studio that I started on location...and got them wired up and written up and delivered to the gallery. (ahhh the joy of acrylic paint)

I have some lovely jars that I brought home from Mexico that bring some color and organization to the multitude of brushes that collect here. With constant use they graduate from the NEW jar, to the nearly new jar, to the not-so-great jar, to the scrubby-scumble-brush jar to the nearly-dead jar.

Most of all I use my sketchbooks for layouts of the paintings that I am thinking about.

If they are from photos - I keep track of where to find them again (caption numbers). I have thousands of reference pics on storage CD's. Using the format of the canvas that I intend to use, I work on composition and value. Sometimes they are just rough doodles...others more refined and complete as the one on the right. I am always looking for the strong graphic elelments and balance for the color and negative spaces.

saw this fellow in distress in the garden a couple of days ago. Found his little body while painting the house trim yesterday. Could have been a cat... or a window...or just natural causes.

amazing to think of the energy that was held in these tiny bones and feathers, organs and skin.To fly like a helicopter and hover in space. With feathers like a jewels they grace my garden throughout the summer. We'll miss him.

we don't technically have a hall...but front and center at the entry is this old dark oak piece.
It has held everything from hats, kids snowsuits to wedding clothes and is a place to drop whatever is at hand.

at present my dirty old garden gloves and cell phone.

the twisted cane wreath went up one christmas and never came down.

working on this drawing I was thinking of all the folks, and eras that have made use of this article. It is probably about 80-100 years old. lacy sunday gloves, walking sticks and dapper mens fedoras from another time.

my house is a new space created with old and salvaged materials. I designed and built it in 1992. The leaded cherry windows are from a distinguished residence that was torn down - circa 1910. Same with the oak stair treads from another home. I love having these salvage materials as part of my surroundings. They have seen views and held footsteps in another time - and now become part of our lives.

Queen Elizabeth Park gardens

the sprinklers were going all over the lower gardens so I found a cliff-side bench. the rocks in the foreground reminded me of the asian natural stone sculptures...like a miniature mountain that mirrored the rugged face of this old quarry.

the prominent thing was the beautiful blue spruce that was lit of like a beacon in the early sun.

waterfall on the right, old bridge and a bit of the Bloedel conservatory dome on the left.

lots of folks walking on the paths, doing TaiChi movements and stopping to view from the bridge.

had a break from viewing the Dutch Masters exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery...

a quick sketch from the beach at Buttle Lake - while I dried off from a welcome swim.

The waterfall was fabulous despite the lack of rainfall, and the sandy bar was so nice to pull the canoe up on with a great view of the falls. mostly rocks and rugged shoreline - with the remnants of tree trunks and roots as a result of the dam flooding. with the low water levels we were the only boat to be seen for the 4 hours we paddled. SOOOOO quiet. what a treat.

ART WORKSHOPS private groups

As I am not teaching at the local College or Art Center at present
I am offering PRIVATE WORKSHOPS to small groups of local students.

A minimum of 6 students is suggested - 10 students Maximum.
Cost will be determined by the level of instruction and medium preferred.
a LOCAL instruction rate of $ 400 per day includes:
6 hours of instruction / studio classroom location / Desks or Easel for all students / Coffee-Tea
(9am - 4pm with breaks for Lunch and coffee)

LOCAL WOKSHOPS - Sunshine Coast: I recommend 2 consecutive Saturdays or Sundays ( as opposed to a full weekend workshop) This allows time for the students to do homework, exercises & preparation for the followup class - not quite as overwhelming as an intensive workshop weekend.

This cost includes an initial meeting with the student to familiarize them with the studio, and assess their level of skill, review materials and discuss previous experience, direction and expectations. The student is required to bring along previous artwork, images and references for the type of subject and style of work that interests and inspires them.

Each student is provided with a customized lesson outline, which will address their individual needs. My instruction will include unique demos, sketches and samples of relevant techniques, which the student can keep.

I have found these personal lessons to be most benenficial to students who have some art experience, working at their own pace, but perhaps without the time or inclination to take a long term class. Lesson times/dates to be determined by the student/instructor.
Gift certificates for lessons must be used within 6 months of purchase.

Recent article about artist JAN POYNTER

The Coast Life is a glossy, full color magazine, published here on the Sunshine Coast. The editorial was researched & written by Gibsons writer Jan DeGrass, and I provided most of the photos. With a feature image on the Contents page and several images within the article I was very pleased with the results, and have had a lot of positive feedback from folks. Most local people connect my name to the painting scene ( and immediatly think of florals...) so it was a great way to inform them of all the other painting subjects, projects and professional installations and commissions.

I have revised my Flickr site to include separate folder "SETS". These will hold images of all my original paintings, grouped by different subject matter (ie: Floral, figures, landscapes, etc). Flickr works really well for me as it is so easy to upload images and make revisions to the site to keep it up to date and relevant to various projects and events as they happen.

When you click on a titled SET folder you can scroll through small thumbnail images of all the works, and click on them for a larger view with the full dispcription. Click on the icon on the upper right side of the page to open a "SLIDESHOW"... a great way to view a sequence of all the images.

With funding and approval of submission by B C Hydro and the District of Sechelt I have completed 3 new original painted art pieces in the downtown core - May 8-June 12 2008

Part of the Downtown Revitalization project, I was assisted by 2 volunteer high school students from Elphinstone Secondary: Jessica Pollard & Allegra Tandy. There was a lot of cleaning and preparation of the boxes before we could begin the painting.

The general theme of the designs is "driftwood"
so I used three different views of coastal shores that incorporate it. A sandy beach, steep rocky cliff, and a stoney shore with deep rainforest beyond.

The boxes were primed with a strong bonding agent and painted with a "ground" color of light brown on all. The designs were then painted freehand in darker brown line work - which is sometimes left revealed incorporated into the final paint work and details as a graphic element. Various texturing and fill methods create the forms and backgrounds. Acrylic paint was used - with a palette of very strong lightfast pigments that will resist UV.

The finished boxes will be varnished with a "sacrificial" coating with extra UV filters, that can be removed and recoated if required, without affecting the paint work underneath.

The smallest box is titled "Sandpiper Shadows" and has a random texture of sandy greys and browns over all. The driftwood images are all taken from local scenes in Sechelt area. The final water treatment on the base of the box is a combination of layered colors under the same transparent glaze used for the shadows on the birds, wood and stone forms.As a final touch I added some very faint footprints around the birds on the sand.

The next large box on Cowrie Street titled "Rocktide", is a view of the local granite shoreline cliffs. The tidal action creates bands of color with "stains" of algea, salt and dark shells and growth in the unique cracks. The rugged rocks captures loose logs at high tide and storms and there they remain, bleached and pale. I think of them as "Forest Bones". I have features some red arbutus limbs and light foliage against the evergreens.
Of course the local bird life has a key role as characters in all the images...
Crows and seagulls hung around commenting on my work as I painted on site.

The last large box is on Wharf Street and features the typical rounded "seastone" shoreline, with heavy stumps and driftwood jumbled along below the dark edge of the forest. The pale native beachgrass and evergreen salal makes an appearance along with some gulls, crows, an oystercatcher and even a black bear peering from the darkness.

"TIME FLIES" A Coastal and Natural History
Sunshine Coast Museum & Archives Mural Project
Nov 2007 - May 2008

Based on the concept of an "overview"I considered different ways to capture the character of our coastal landscape in an all encompassing format. I chose the graphic element of seagulls in the foreground to create an aerial or "bird's eye" view, and reflect our maritime, seaside environment.

These bird figures also lead your eye in one direction across the 6 panels - flowing through the timeline from past to present.

I also wanted to use a medium or style that reflected the notion of history & antiquity, in keeping with the museum collections. I chose the strong graphic quality of old fashioned "engraved" illustration. Simliar to woodcuts, or engravings produced for hundreds of years as graphic representations in traditional printing, this scratchboard technique creates a bold, handcut look that captures details and maintains an exciting surface pattern.

Six scratchboard panels 14 " x 36" will be produced and then scanned at a high resolution for enlargement. The final mural will be printed in Black & White on 10ft x 5ft aluminum based substrate, (DiBond by Alcan) that has a fine white print ready surface, and will resist any water or weathering elements. (as opposed to plywood panels)

The finished panels will then be painted by hand in acrylic paints, with all the color fill, and finally coated with a UV and AntiGrafitti coating after it has dried and cured.

As part of the submission I used photographs of the actual museum building, and images of the color design to create a Photoshop mockup of the finished installation. This has been very usefull in presentations to the Town of Gibsons, Community Arts Committee and funding sources.

PUBLIC ART - Gibsons & Sechelt

In the spring of 2007 there was a call for interest by the Sunshine Coast Museum & Archive in Gibsons, British Columbia. Eleven portfolio submissions were recieved from various artists and craftspeople. Of those susmissions, three artists were chosen to produce a design proposal, including a budget and timeline for installation. There was a $500 honorarium paid to the artists for this submission. (that's nice for a change)

I worked on my design and presentation materials through July/August, between my Artist in Residence program at Ruby Lake - Iris Griffith Center, and finishing paintings, promotion and and hanging of my figurative show at the SC Arts Center in Sechelt, Aug 23-Sept 21.
It turned out to be a very busy, creative summer!

The outline for the project provided by the museum committee was very "broad'...only that the whole coast - Egmont to Port Mellon must be represented (not one specific area) along with the whole history, including natural history... of the area. From beginnning to Present. In a "removable" format (they don't own the building) 30 feet long by 12 feet high. It sounds a little intimidating...but I already had a visual image of the narrative theme I would utilize for the design.

The submitting artists were provided with a CD of images from the museum archives, most from the collection of Gibsons resident, Helen McCall. What a wonderful excursion into the past that was...recognizing locations, family names and events that brought the history of our beautiful coast to light.

I proceeded to establish details within a generic coastal landscape, that included the historical elements from the First Nations, the discovery and survey by Captain Vancouver, early pioneers, settlement, steamship and tourism...right through to our present ferries and recreational activities. Lots of extra research, historical and visual references were gathered online. The natural history of the local area will be represented in "uncolored" border graphics. Black & White scratchboard illustration will include; rainforest, shoreline, tidal, suface and undersea impressions with relevant wildlife, birds, flora and fauna.

In my submission to the Museum committee, I provided a detailed pencil illustration of all the narrative components of the mural panels, with a "key" to explain the various visual elements, that would be too small in the sketch, to interperet. I produced a color rough sketch - based on old style traditional map graphics, which would be the basis of the hand-coloring of the scratchboard graphics. I provided a printed and handpainted enlargement on a panel, that replicates the full size graphic panels, printed black & white - with the painted color added. Samples of various mural panel substrates, fitting designs for installation, and quotes from the suppliers were collected for the submission.

I met with the committee for a presentation - and was notified within days of my submission - that I had won the job, and proceeded to finalize a timeline, for production and installation and a detailed budget. There was some concern of the Town of Gibsons approval, as they own the building and required review to council and the Arts Committee, and more information required for the funding submissions. (Community Foundation, Arts Partners, etc.)

I found the process to be very well organized, and much more time effective that other community projects involving committees and boards. My thanks to Reanna at the SC Museum for her effective administration, and the committee for their forthright dealings. I look forward to the creative production work, and the addition of a new creative element to out little town.
Thanks also to Joanne Heatherington, for her offer of studio space (utilizing the shop space at Zocalo in lower Gibsons while they were closed for their winter holiday) Unfortunately the print production was not completed in time to utilize this offer of space. Public space was provided eventually by the leasing company for the Sunnycrest Mall - Anthem Properties.This provided a valuable "public" component to the creative process, sharing with and educating locals and visitors about the artwork, techniques, background and future of the installation.
